Archbishop José H. Gomez invites all people of good will throughout the three-county Archdiocese of Los Angeles to participate in a Novena of Prayer for Peace initiated by the Knights of Columbus through July 22. This endeavor encourages all to join in praying for peace in the wake of repeated acts of violence in communities throughout the nation in recent weeks.
“In these days when our country is mourning the deaths of police officers and others who have died in violence in our cities, let us ask God’s comfort for their families and loved ones” said Archbishop Gomez. “I encourage all of you to join me in the Novena for Peace that the Knights of Columbus have begun. Together for these next nine days (July 14-22), let’s pray St. Francis of Assisi’s beautiful prayer for peace. Let us ask God for peace in our country and in our world — and may this peace begin in your heart and mine.”
The Prayer for Peace of Saint Francis of Assisi, which is presented below, will be prayed for nine days starting today.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Our story began in 1926, when seven religious sisters from Belgium, the Daughters of Mary and Joseph (DMJs) came to Culver City to build a Catholic school that has served the local and global community for the past 90 years. Today, the DMJ’s charism and visionary dedication permeates our school culture for the benefit of our students, families, parishioners and the community-at-large.
SAS is a member of the I3 Innovation Institute at the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Recognized for its faith-filled learning environment, rigorous academics, Ambassador Program and innovations, SAS has evolved into a 21st Century learning community that focuses on global competence, intercultural skills and student leadership. The school offers world languages of Spanish, French and Arabic and various other electives, such as digital composition.
Among our current faculty are four SAS alumnae, Ms. Doody, (Vice Principal), Mrs. Flicker (Religion Coordinator & Student Government Moderator), Mrs. Sagliani (Teacher) and Mrs. Flippen, (Early Childhood Vice Principal). Our alumni are over 3000 strong, and their work and lives were deeply impacted by the nurturing Catholic education they experienced at SAS.
Today, our Early Childhood Continuum stretches over four years from Licensed Preschool 2+, 3+, TK to Kindergarten. In collaboration with LAUp and the Race-to-the-Top, SAS meets the growing needs for young learners through quality education. In Grades 1 – 8 students continue to grow in their faith, learn to appreciate their unique cultural heritage and develop the fundamental skills needed for success in high school and beyond. For the past years, SAS graduates have had a 100% success rate in their admission to a Catholic High School of their choice.
Our year-long celebration of the 90th Anniversary is a true acknowledgement of the dedication, mission and vision of the past 90 years. We thank all religious sisters, pastors, educators, administrators, students and families who have made SAS the great school it is. We are committed to making the next 90 years as successful as the past! Join us as we celebrate the impact of Christ’s love in our school, parish and community. For details about our 90th Anniversary or to reconnect with your Alma mater, please tap “the 9oth” at the top of the navigation bar.
This week, our SAS students along with millions of students across the world will participate in ‘The Hour of Code’. The Hour of Code is a website and global movement by Computer Education Week and Code.org that encourages students to learn Computer Science. The initiative is supported by partnerships with leading technology companies and corporate sponsors. The website introduces students to basic programming by allowing them to participate in a variety of 1-hour coding activities. Students receive a certificate after completing each of the activities.

Learning about “caring” begins at a young age! Impacting the world in a positive way occurs through service-learning, collaboration and problem-solving. For the past years, SAS Ambassadors have supported the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) through their efforts. This year again, students are participating in the UNICEF “Trick-or-Treat” fundraiser for children around the globe.
UNICEF Ambassador Ms. Cambria visited our classrooms to speak about the need for schooling, drinking water and other necessities in life, that we often take for granted in our daily routines. By visiting with students, our children get a first-hand account of how each of us can truly make a difference for children around the world. Did you know that only 7 cents can make an impact?
So far, SAS has been able to provide 4 villages with a “School-in-a-Box!” Let’s make that five, or six ….or even more this year! Let’s Trick-or-Treat together for UNICEF! Works of Mercy, Vision of Hope!
Are you interested in providing your children a Catholic education but wonder whether the investment will offset the benefits?
Visit us this week to get insight from our parents, teachers, and student ambassadors and experience first hand how selecting a Catholic education can give your child a strong foundation for success.
