On August 28, 1926, the Feast of Saint Augustine, a pioneer group of religious women, three Irish, three English, and one Dutch, all members of the Daughters of Mary and Joseph, opened a new parochial school in Culver City. The official start date for the school year was September 7, 1926, with an enrollment of 123 children in four classrooms; all located in the newly renovated St. Augustine Parish Hall. Because of the growing population of Culver City and surrounding neighborhoods, additional bungalows were built in 1938 to accommodate increasing enrollment. The current school building was built in 1947. By the late 1960's, St. Augustine School was a double-grade K-8 school. In the 1970's the double grades were phased out. Today, St. Augustine Catholic School offers Preschool to 8th Grade and is headed by Principal Norman Mezey and his dedicated staff. The school continues to exert a positive influence in the community by offering a strong spiritual and academic program to a diverse student body. |
